JOHN MEADE FALKNER PHOTOGRAPH #06

JMF & the Stocks in 1920

JMF with Edward and Mrs. Stocks circa 1920 in Durham.
The original snap from which the previous picture (a postcard) was made. This came from a family photograph album dated 1929-1932. Here he is with Edward and Mrs. Stocks in Finchale Abbey in Durham.
Edward Stocks had been appointed Durham U. Librarian in 1899, and was one of JMF's few close friends. He catalogued the entire Durham U library in longhand (much of this work survived up into the early '80's.) and was devoted to 'statistical bibliography'. He also helped in the preparation of the New English Dictionary as well as a new handlist of English printed books up to 1641. Much of his spare time [:-)] was spent cataloguing JMF's own continually growing collection of rare books and manuscripts.
