YEAR: 1927
PRINTING: Recess
COLOUR: Black and Green. SG# 38. Sc# 31
Green background is filled with horizontal lines. Between the country name and the upper border there are, however, a lot of very short, nearly vertical lines.
The left side of the vertical leg in the 'R' of 'AFRICA' is uneven and slopes somewhat.
'SUIDAFRIKA' is not hyphenated.




YEAR: 1933, 1944
PRINTING: Rotogravure
COLOUR: Black and Green(1933) or Blue-green(1944). SG# 64,b. Sc# 64
There are no near-vertical lines between the country name and the border.
Horizontal lines are coarser and cruder.
The left side of the vertical leg in the 'R' in 'AFRICA' is smooth and vertical. 'SUID-AFRIKA' is hyphenated.




YEAR: 1949
PRINTING: Rotogravure
COLOUR: Black and Pale Blue-green. SG# 122. Sc# 65
Printed from new cylinders with design in fully screened rotogravure. Design is composed of very small squares of colour arranged in straight diagonal lines.




YEAR: 1954
PRINTING: Rotogravure
COLOUR: Black and Deep Yellow-green. SG# 122a. Sc# 66
Redesigned 'U' in "SOUTH'in which the projections are lost. the 'U' in 'SUID', however remained unchanged.
Furthermore the colour of the frame is distinctly different.
This was issued in January 1954 but replaced by the new animal design in October of the same year.
